Let it Snow!!!

It's been snowing here for a couple of days, but most of it is melting as fast as it comes down.  Roads are dry, so my sis and I went thrift store shopping today.  I was in a snowy mood for sure!  Found this cute photo frame:

and this metal photo frame:

and this metal sleigh:

and this candle ring

came home and started taking the frames and the candle ring apart and reassembling them on the sleigh on top of the snowmen that were there.  You can see the metal showman from the frame on the lower right and the plastic snowmen to the left of him:

the other metal tree to the left.  I painted the entire sleigh with Cool Pool Blue Ranger dabber.  OK, that dabber is 6 years old and the paint inside is still good! I think that's pretty amazing.

I put the greenery around the bottom, added a ribbon, stickled the background, the greenery with crystal stickles.

It's got great depth.  I love all the shadows as well as the detail….

So much better than the original sleigh.  And the colors are updated.  I'm going to let it dry overnight and then hang it outside by my front door in the morning.

Recycled art - something that I love doing.  All 4 items totaled $8.00.  Love the thrift stores around here!!!

HOTP and Prima

Hot off the Press makes fun paper crafting kits.  I think this one was called "chocolate".  Our local scrapbook store carries them and you can call them and order them.  Design U'R Memories.

I used a ton of crystal Stickles to make these cards.

and I just love the new Julie Nutting Prima doll stamps.  I have them all!!!  Copic markers to color in the hair.  A little ribbon and lace never hurt anything!

I made glitter paper our of some of the paper by adding tape and glitter  by Elizabeth Craft.

These next few cards are from card kits made up by the store.  I don't really "do" country, but I enjoyed making these.

This next one is simply 2 skirts, layered - make the dress look much larger

I've gotta find more lace - I'm all out!

I've probably made over 100 cards this summer and no, I won't blog them all.  But this is a start to return to blogging on a regular basis.  I never knew that I would enjoy card making this much - but it's a great way to use up all my scraps and leftover bits and pieces.  I sort of think of them as miniature scrapbook pages - without the photos!

A great way to spend a hot afternoon when I can't stay out in the flower gardens!

Painted pavers

Been awhile since I've blogged, huh?  I have just been too busy!!!  Some days, I'm not so sure that's such a good thing.  But I am happy.  Content.  Enjoying gardening.  Who knew?  And I "hate" Pinterest!  LOL!!!

So, I saw these pavers (on Pinterest) that Crafty Chica did and knew that I had to make my own version.  The first 2 are pretty close to what she did.  And she used individual bricks.  Mine are done on pavers that are 8" wide and 15" long.  About the equivalent of 4 bricks each.

and I found the 3 little flowers (cement) at a thrift store and repainted them to match:

I painted on words "Welcome to my Garden, where I grow happiness."  I thought that was the perfect sentiment for my summer gardening.

I used Ranger's dimensional pearl paints, some Plaid acrylic paints, a black sharpie marker and then after letting them dry for 48 hours, I sealed them with cement sealer.  I do love the shimmer that the pearl paints provided.  I continue to try to use up my stash so I can have room for more "stuff" in my little studio!  I think this was the perfect use of acrylic paints!

The bottom tile, well, if I have the time, I'll blog again tomorrow.  I painted these same birds on pillows in my house this summer.  I thought they were just perfect for these pavers.

The shadows were just wrong this morning!  But the pavers are the entrance to an arbor and a path that goes to a gate entering my back yard.  OK, so you need to come see just what it looks like in real life!

I ended up putting the flowers down the side.  I have another path and a whole patio to finish up next.  Really - August 6??  Where has my summer gone?  I hope those who do come to visit will enjoy these brightly painted pavers as they wander through my flowers.  :o)

All those empty cricut boxes

Now that Michaels sells this nifty little organizer to put your books and cartridges in - what did you do with all those empty boxes?

I set off to decorate a few of mine!  I loved the old dioramas that we made in grade school and these boxes are the perfect size for them!

Here's the front of the box.  diecuts, flowers, pearls, bling.  Love this paper!

a diecut dressform and then Jolee's stickers - really!  And prima velvet flowers.

So my cricut box is now a perfect closet!

But then I found some old battery operated lights and decided I needed to do something to use them.  This was a bit more difficult as I literally built a faux back to the box to hide the battery and wires so I still had the full depth of the box to play with.  This one has to stay open, the first one can be closed.

The lights are on the top left side of the open box.

The deer are die cuts.  The 3D snowmen are ornaments from the thrift store.  Tim Holtz trees.  The snowflake border diecut across the top, ok lots of die cuts.  You'll have to look at these closeups...and I made the tissue paper tensile  on the bottom.

The deer are cut in glitter paper, and there's loads of crystal stickles glitter that just doesn't show up.  vintage blue rayon ribbons.  Even a tiny little bird in the tree.  It's so much fun to have to hunt to find all the little things buried in this former cricut box!

I do think I love doing dimensional paper art like this and diecuts just make it so much fun!  Most of these are from Memory Box.  Even the paper in the background is gorgeous.

So once again, what did you do with your empty cricut boxes???

Mom's Teacup

The last time I posted, we were in Kingman AZ, and Kerry's mom had just passed away.  The very next day, I got a note that mom was failing and Kerry and I drove back to Colorado.  We got to see mom several times on Wednesday and talk with her.  On Thursday morning, we went to say goodbye and Kerry flew back to Kingman.  She knew who we were, but that was the last time.  Kerry's mom's funeral was on Friday (9/21) and mom passed away that day.

And while I have no doubt that she is in heaven, relieved of all of her pain and suffering and I should be so joyful...it is hard.  I am so grateful for so much.  Grateful that we moved here and I had the summer with her.  Grateful that we found a little house just 2 blocks from where she was living.  Grateful that I was able to tell her how much I loved her, and that I knew she loved me. So grateful that she believed in Jehovah Jesus Messiah and was such an amazing role model.   Grateful beyond everything else that God picked her as my mom.

The next day was a weekend crop here at the Abbey.  I decided to go.  What better way to remember mom than to make something so beautiful.  It's a teacup!

Well, really, it is.  It's a sizzix bigz xl diecut.  Cut it in pretty thick chipboard, then covered each side with Graphic 45 "Ladies Journal" paper.

And then I took my hot glue gun and went to town.  I don't remember what I was thinking - there were plenty of others around, and my dear friend, Kathy, was sitting right next to me.  I'm sure we talked.  But mostly the world went silent and I just kept thinking, "oh!  mom would think this was so cute....what can I put here?  there's a space there, what do I have to put in there?"  and one must take some serious time to find it all.  See the clear acrylic dressform?

Many of these are chipboard cutouts from Bo Bunny - "Little Miss" - but you won't find them in the store like this.  Loads of stickles, added the flower and heart to the teddy bear....see the dressform shaped paper clip in the center?  Little words cut out and inked.....

Phrases cut out and inked...."Life is about creating yourself".  I felt like mom would enjoy that as a theme for her teacup.  Most of the flowers were white - inked and stickled.  So pretty!

Even the little girl was inked, stickled, flowered....I love the chipwood laser cut dressform behind her.

I did all that in about 4 hours as I was in and out all day long.  I'm so glad Kathy was staying with me.  I'm not sure I could have managed being alone at night.  Timing.  Who could have ever imagined my mom passing on the day of Kerry's mom's funeral?

To the ladies who were at the crop, I really am sorry.  Normally, I'm chatting with everyone.  But on this day, I was lost in my own little world.  Thank you for giving me the space that I needed.

I went back on Sunday.  And decided to start a journal to go with the teacup.  I think it's going to be glamorous!

I made my own templates, cut out acrylic cover and back and about 4 inner pages.  Each page has a different sheet.  You can click on any image to make it larger.  The fun thing about acrylic is that you have to cover the back of everything on the front and then put things on the back of the acrylic to cover up the front.  Makes decision making a little more complex.

And what fun detail.  The lady is in the paper, but the stickled diecut above her hat was the perfect embellishment.  And note all the ink on the paper - you won't find it nearly this colorful in the store!

I put stickled diecuts on top of another laser dressform that was inked.  I think I could have played all day long.

Now everyone grieves their losses in different ways.  In November 2010, I wrote several blogs in an 8 or 9 part series titled "Does Art Heal?"  You can access it from the home page of my blog, down the right hand side.  Knowing what I do about grief and the healing process.....creating is probably the most perfect way for me to grieve.

Inside the journal, each page will have a journaling spot.....embellished....and I will write my thoughts about mom in this journal.

I have a long way to go!

The teacup and journal are over to the right on top of some glass cases.  On the left is a collection of things that remind me of mom....surrounded by her paintings.    A jar of her paint brushes, one of her coffee cups.  An artist doll I bought her once, red glass cats she had.  She did love cats!

And while I will miss her always, I will not grieve her passing.  My joy is in knowing her destination.  In having a home filled with her paintings, and the ability to create art in her honor.  Colleen and I made 30 more teacups (ok, nothing this fancy!) and stuffed one of her hankies and some candy in each one and took them over and passed them out at the retirement village where mom lived.  We will continue to sing on Mondays as mom really liked that.  I will continue to blog as she loved reading about what I was doing.  She always said I should write more on my if-isms blog...maybe in time I will add to that.

Kerry is staying in Kingman with his dad and I am here getting the house ready for winter.  We laugh and say we have a "skype" marriage.  Yesterday I skyped him the valve box for the sprinkler system and he was able to walk me through the steps of draining the sprinklers for the winter.  Pretty amazing.  It's really not much different than when he traveled all the time with IBM.

Life will never be the same, but we will slowly evolve what we knew into a new routine.  I know many of you heard about mom through the grapevine, but I wanted to write this blog for those who didn't and to share my celebration art.  Thank you for all of your kind emails and cards.  It's wonderful to have so many friends around the globe.  This has been a difficult post to write, but I'm sure I'll be back soon!

To the rescue!!!

Well, first, let me tell you about my week.  I said I was going to start blogging again....and then I get sick as a dog!  Picked up some stomach bug and have been asleep since Tuesday morning!  Stomach flu, fever, so weak I couldn't get out of bed, didn't eat for 3 days!!!  And we all know I have to be terribly sick to not eat!!!  But this morning - I'm back on track.   Called Colleen and asked if she wanted me to drive her around to look at houses. Of course....I really wanted to go to garage sales!!!  LOL!!!

I love Willow Tree images.  And today, I found a poor broken angel for just 50 cents!!!  Her ponytail had been glued on and then broken off again....lots of glue build up.

She looked just fine from the front.....but I needed to rescue her!

Started out with undu to remove all the glue.  Some was so thick I used my craftknife to scrape it off.

If you do not have a detail sander that looks like this, you must get one!  They sand in the tiniest places and are just a great little tool!!!    I think it's only $4.00.  Used this to sand both pieces so they would adhere better to each other.

527 is the absolute best glue I have found for adhering broken china, pottery, figurines, etc.  Let it dry for about 20 minutes.  I find it at hardware stores in Colorado.  It's not glue, be sure to get the one that says "multi-purpose cement".

Next, I used 3 shades of ranger paint dabbers and 1 shade of memory makers paint to mix up the perfect match for her hair color.  And it really did come out a perfect match!

I used my detail sander to distress her hair:

And no one will ever know she once was ponytail-less!!!

She is just beautiful!

and won for 50 cents

and a few moments of my time

This is my "family grouping" that I have created over the past year - finding most of them at thrift stores for $.99 each.  The artist is Susan Lordi and I would love to be able to design like she does!

50 cents and a little rescue project.....now you know why I'm such a garage sale addict!  And no, Colleen didn't find a house today.  Dare we try this again tomorrow?  LOL!!!
